Dog Bite & Rabies: What You Need to Know - Vaccination & Prevention
It is important to seek medical attention immediately if you are bitten by a dog, regardless of whether or not the dog is vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is a fatal disease, and the only way to prevent it is to receive the rabies vaccine.
In the United States, all dogs are required to be vaccinated against rabies. However, there is still a chance that you could be bitten by a rabid dog, even if the dog is vaccinated. This is because the rabies vaccine is not 100% effective.
If you are bitten by a dog, the doctor will clean the wound and may prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection. You will also be given the rabies vaccine. The rabies vaccine is a series of shots that are given over a period of several weeks.
It is important to complete the entire series of rabies vaccines to ensure that you are protected from rabies. If you do not complete the series of vaccines, you could still get rabies.
If you have any questions about rabies, please talk to your doctor.
