Left Thumb Itching Superstition: Folklore Links It to Money and Good Luck

In many folk traditions, an itchy left thumb (or palm) signifies incoming money or financial luck. Variants:

• Left hand = receiving; right hand = giving/paying out.
• Thumb specifically = unexpected windfall, raise, or finding money.
• Some cultures: rub the itch on wood to “seal” the luck.

No scientific basis exists. Itch (pruritus) is mediated by histamine, cytokines, neuropeptides (IL-31, TSLP) acting on C-fibers. Common medical causes:

• Contact dermatitis (nickel, latex, soap).
