24-Hour Urine Protein Calculation
1. Collect a 24-hour urine sample.
2. Measure the total volume of the urine sample in milliliters (mL).
3. Send a sample of the urine to the lab for protein measurement.
4. The lab will report the protein concentration in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).
5. To calculate the total amount of protein in the 24-hour urine sample, multiply the protein concentration (mg/dL) by the total urine volume (mL) and then divide by 1000.
Total protein in 24 hr urine = (protein concentration in mg/dL) * (total urine volume in mL) / 1000
For example, if the protein concentration is 100 mg/dL and the total urine volume is 2000 mL, the total amount of protein in the 24-hour urine sample would be:
(100 mg/dL) * (2000 mL) / 1000 = 200 mg
Interpretation of Results
The normal range for total protein in 24-hour urine is 50-200 mg. Higher levels of protein in the urine may indicate kidney disease or other medical conditions.
