DPT Vaccine: Understanding Diphtheria, Pertussis & Tetanus
The DPT vaccine (diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus) is a combination vaccine that protects against three bacterial infections:
- Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that can cause difficulty breathing, heart failure, paralysis, and even death.
- Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes severe coughing fits. It can be life-threatening for young children.
- Tetanus (lockjaw) is a serious bacterial infection that causes muscle spasms and can lead to death.
The DPT vaccine is typically given as a series of shots over the course of several months, starting at 2 months of age. A booster dose is then given at 4-6 years of age and every 10 years thereafter.
The DPT vaccine is very safe and effective. It has been shown to be over 99% effective in preventing diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus.
