What is the Rhomberg reflex?
Rhomberg reflex refers to the occurrence of lateral swaying due to impaired proprioceptive input from the lower limbs. It is observed in individuals with posterior column or vestibular disorders.
A person stands with the feet close together and the eyes closed. The base of support is narrow and the sway increases.
The stability is maintained by the cerebellum, the posterior column pathways, and the labyrinth together. Any damage leads to swaying which is increased further by the closing of the eyes.
