Post-Operative Transgender Terminology: Moving Beyond "Transsexual"

The term "post-op transsexual" is outdated and often considered offensive. It historically referred to a transgender person who has undergone gender-affirming surgery (also called sex reassignment surgery or gender confirmation surgery).

Preferred Terminology

• Transgender person or trans person – umbrella terms.
• Post-operative or post-surgical – if surgical status is clinically relevant.
• Gender-affirming surgery – modern, respectful term for procedures aligning physical characteristics with gender identity.

Why Language Matters

"Transsexual" pathologizes gender identity and focuses on medical transition rather than the person. Major medical and advocacy organizations (WPATH, APA, GLAAD) recommend using "transgender" and avoiding "transsexual" unless a person specifically self-identifies that way.

Always use the language a person uses for themselves.
