Salzmann's Nodular Degeneration: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
Salzmann’s nodular degeneration is an uncommon bilateral corneal disorder affecting the superficial corneal stroma. It is an age-related condition typically characterized by the formation of multiple, small, grayish-white nodules in the periphery of the cornea.
Symptoms:
-Blurred or hazy vision
-Glare
-Dryness
-Irregular astigmatism
-Pain
-Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
-Redness
-Tearing
Causes:
-Age
-Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation
-Dry eye syndrome
-Ocular trauma
-Certain systemic diseases, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren's syndrome
Treatment:
-Artificial tears or ointments to relieve symptoms
-Sunglasses to protect eyes from UV radiation
-Corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) to strengthen the cornea
-Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) to remove the nodules and reshape the cornea
In some cases, Salzmann’s nodular degeneration can progress to more serious corneal conditions, such as scarring, ulceration, and perforation. It is important to see an ophthalmologist for proper diagnosis and treatment to prevent these complications.
