His work on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) led to the development of the MRI machine. He worked on ways to use the magnetic properties of atoms to create images of the inside of the body. He invented a way to use a magnetic field to align the atoms in the body and then used radio waves to create images. This type of imaging is now used in hospitals all over the world.
