Milk Thistle: Benefits, Uses & Scientific Evidence
Silybum marianum, or milk thistle, has been use as a remedy for gall bladder and liver problems for the last 2,000 years. While modern research has yet to determine definitively whether milk thistle provides any benefit for humans, it is still used commonly to treat these problems.-
Silymarin
-
Silymarin is a group of flavonoids found in milk thistle seeds that researchers believe can repair alcohol and toxin-damaged liver cells and defend new cells against these harmful substances as well as reduce inflammation.
Modern Studies
-
The Mayo Clinic has rated a number of studies done on silymarin and determined that many were poorly designed and conducted, or studied too small a test group. These include studies related to Cirrhosis, cancer, Amanita phalloides mushroom poisoning, diabetes and chronic liver disease among others. Results remain inconclusive.
Safety Precautions
-
If you are considering trying silymarin supplements, you should consult a trained health professional. People can have allergic reactions to milk thistle if they are allergic to other plants categorized in the aster family and there has been some concern that it can lower blood sugar levels. If you are already using medication, consult your doctor before taking products that contain silymarin.
Credentialed alternative health practitioners, such as herbalists, can be a good source of information regarding milk thistle therapies.
