How to Treat Coughs With Spanish Onions
Coughing is a defense mechanism of the body that helps expel germs from the lungs and windpipe. It is a symptom of a number of ailments, including the common cold, asthma, pneumonia, acute bronchitis, whooping cough and croup in children. Onions and raw honey are effective for coughs, as they are both antibacterial. Onions are rich in sulfur compounds and vitamin C and have anti-inflammatory properties. Honey has been shown to reduce nighttime coughing and promote sleep.Things You'll Need
- Knife
- Cutting board
- Bowl
- 2 cups raw honey
- Plate
- Strainer
- Jigger of brandy
Instructions
Thinly slice two large Spanish onions with your knife and cutting board and put in a bowl.
Pour 2 cups raw honey over the sliced onions, cover the bowl with a plate and let stand overnight.
Put the mixture through a strainer the following morning (it should be very syrupy), and add a jigger of brandy to it (this will help deaden pain from coughing).
Take 1 tsp. of syrup every three hours until symptoms disappear, which should be in a week or less.
Bottle and refrigerate the mixture in between uses.
