Accurate Temperature Readings: Why Shake a Clinical Thermometer?

To ensure an accurate reading, a clinical thermometer typically has a constriction just above the mercury (or alcohol) reservoir. After use, a portion of the mercury column remains near the bulb; shaking the thermometer forcefully forces the mercury back over the constriction before the next use.
