Mumps and Hot Baths: What You Need to Know
It is generally not advisable to take a hot bath when you have mumps. Mumps is a viral infection of the salivary glands that can cause swelling and pain in the face and neck. Taking a hot bath can increase blood flow to the affected area and worsen the swelling and pain.
Instead of taking a hot bath, you can try the following to relieve symptoms of mumps:
- Apply cold compresses to the swollen areas.
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Eat soft foods that are easy to swallow.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to reduce fever and pain.
If your symptoms are severe or do not improve within a few days, you should see a doctor.
