What is the purpose of a bronchoscope?
A bronchoscope is a medical instrument used to examine the airways (trachea and bronchi) of the lungs. It is a thin, flexible tube with a camera attached to the end, allowing the medical practitioner to take images and visualise the airway and lungs. It can also collect tissue or fluid samples and allow medical teams to carry out medical procedures or provide treatment directly without the need for surgery. These treatments may include biopsies, removal of blockages, insertion of stents and even laser surgery. Overall, a bronchoscope allows medical professionals to see beyond the point of vision inside the mouth which makes it a versatile tool for diagnosing and potentially treating various conditions with great specificity.
