You start chest compressions with breaths for an adult in two scenarios:1) Witness sudden collapse (in which case begin CPR immediately after checking the scene and confirming that the adult is unresponsive and is not breathing or only gasping)
2) If the person has ineffective breathing or stops breathing after having received effective breaths previously.
