Merthiolate and Open Wounds: Risks and Safer Alternatives

Merthiolate is a brand name for the antiseptic thimerosal, which is a mercury-based compound. It is no longer recommended for use on open wounds as it can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and even mercury poisoning. The use of merthiolate has been replaced by other, safer antiseptic agents such as hydrogen peroxide, iodine, and alcohol-based solutions.
