Heart and Lungs: The Core Organs of Your Cardiorespiratory System
The two main organs of cardiorespiratory system are the heart and the lungs.
- The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. It is located in the center of the chest, slightly to the left. The heart has four chambers: two atria (upper chambers) and two ventricles (lower chambers). The atria receive blood from the body and the ventricles pump blood out to the body.
- The lungs are two large, spongy organs that are located on either side of the heart. The lungs are responsible for gas exchange, which is the process of taking in oxygen from the air and releasing carbon dioxide. The lungs are made up of millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are lined with capillaries, which are tiny blood vessels. Oxygen from the air diffuses across the alveoli and into the capillaries, and carbon dioxide diffuses from the capillaries into the alveoli.
